Tuesday Rant? and Ig nobel prize

Am only writing as a response to a previous post I read: And No am not one of those people who slam what other people have written. Nope. this is simply a response to Jamaapoa who asks if Wangari Maathai can become president.
I have a few questions in response to that:

Did we or did we not know Hon Wangari before her Peace Prize?

Was she not the founder of Greenbelt movement before her NPP?

Was she not in the public eye before the NPP?

And this for me is the clincher, DID SHE NOT STAND IN 1997 AS A PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE?

And did we not REJECT her?

So what has changed since then? So she received international recognition. and then? Does that mean we should now elect her? why do we feel the need to ignore our heroes until somebody else recognizes them?

Parting shot: Since this is the Nobel prize season dont forget to check out the Ig nobel prizes
or here their motto is:
The prizes for achievements that "make people laugh and then think"

This just proves the adage a prophet is not honoured in his/her own homeland!

I agree with EGM.
Kenyans are fickle people and the fact that they rejected her once means they wont hesitate to do it again.

Half 'n' half,
As you quite rightly point out, the NPP does not automatically qualify one to run a country. I actually think Prof. Maathai was more beneficial to Kenyans as an environmental, human rights and democracy activist. The decapitation of civil society in 2002 by the incorporation of its leadership into the NARC government is one of the reasons why the government has been able to backtrack on commitments to democracy and the rule of law. Maathai should consider returning to the activism that served us so well instead of sullying her reputation by sticking to a government of thieves.

I will agree with Gathara on this. What we need is her activism which has more or less disappeard after the NPP award. Bring attention to the massacare of trees that is decimating our remaining 2 or 3% of forest.

i know she cannot be as recognized in that post. her npp highlighted to kenyans the talent they have all along been ignoring. but i believe she would be a good president than what we have in office and in waiting.

she is a 'whsipering' president in waiting due to the fact that she has announced in public she wants to be and at the same time appreciated in public that the political current is against her. i have speculated the reasons for her shying away from going all the way.

but as pointed above judging her latter life in politics, she was much beneficial as an activist than her incorporation into government. i doubt whether she will be back in politics come the next elections. she most likely would want to keep off politics.

well, I think we can all agree that she is definately a better activist than a politician.
